Thursday Thighlights, 11/8/12

Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, it’s our last double-header of 2012! Come out to watch the Yankee Brutals take on the Granite State Legislashers, and be sure to stay for the second act: CTRG’s 2012 home team championship bout!! Will the Iron Angels defeat the Bone Crushers? Will Crazy Legz Nikki’s family take over CSC in a sea of body paint and glitter? The only way to know is to be there (since, let’s be real: we never can remember to post the bout scores here in a timely fashion). Get ticketshere, and all the vital info here! We will be collecting winter coats for Backyard Humanitarian to benefit people in Stamford. All sizes of clean, warm, new or gently used winter coats are needed! And our friends at Meriden Humane Society are looking for donations, which we will be collection at the bout. Canned dog and cat food, Purina Cat Chow, Purina One chicken and rice dry food, and blankets and comforters are needed! We will also (as if we haven’t asked enough of you already) be taking donations for the Red Cross and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts AND we’ll have a station so that you can send a holiday card (via the Red Cross) to servicemembers who will be overseas for the winter. Is that it? I think that’s it. Phew! That’s a lot.

What a night! LIRR took the win over the Yankee Brutals with a final score of 322-53, and in home team action, the Bone Crushers bested the Widowmakers in another last jam nailbiter (150-146), clinching their spot in our November 10th championship doubleheader! Thanks to all the fans and superfans who came out, and superextradoubleturbo thanks to Monkey Brains and Sabatage Sabal, visiting skaters from HARD, who busted their humps all night for the Widowmakers!

Friday the 26th, come skate with a rollergirl at Roller Magic (60 Harvester Road) in Waterbury! We’ll be there from 8-10, and you should be too! $6.50 gets you in the door, skate rental is extra.
November 3, we’re hosting a fundraiser at Orange Ale House! From 6-10, for a slim $8 you get dinner and the company of the scariest rollergirls Connecticut has to offer! We’ll have cupcakes, raffle tickets, and a host of prizes. See you there!
Have you ever wondered how we practice? November 8, CTRG is hosting an open practice, and you’re invited!

Can you believe it’s bout week already? Get your pregame on, and join us tomorrow night at Moe’s in New Haven for a night of burritos, fundraising, and more burritos!
Then the main event! Saturday the Yankee Brutals will take on the LIRR Rock-a-Betty Bruisers (say that three times fast!) and in home team action, the Widowmakers will face off with the Bone Crushers to decide who will be joining the Iron Angels in the 2012 CTRG home team chapmionship bout (that’s happening November 10 - mark your calendars!). Can you even stand it? As if the bout wasn’t excitement enough, we’ll be collecting paper goods for Master’s Table of Ansonia. Plus, kids can trick-or-treat at our awesome vendors and enter CTRG’s (first annual?) costume contest! A little tip from me to you: any kid dressed up like a hot dog is pretty much guaranteed to win the whole thing. See you there!

Saturday, CTRG will be at Milford Boys & Girls Club’s Pumpkins on the Pier! You’ve seen us rough up girls on the track, now see the damage we can do to innocent pumpkins. CTRG and the Death Quads will be doing a skating demo at 1pm, and Krazy Legz Nikki will represent in the pumpkin pie eating contest at 4pm. You’ll want front row seats for all the pumpkin action.
Do you have your tickets for our October 20th double-header yet? Why not? Seriously, what’s wrong with you? We all know you’re just going to spend the night gnawing on a block of cheese and sitting around in your underpants, so why not do that at CSC with us?! We’ll be collecting paper goods (napkins, paper plates and cups, and plastic cutlery) for Master’s Table of Ansonia AND don’t forget to get your costumes ready - we’ll be having a halftime Halloween contest for the kids, and they can even trick-or treat at our vendor tables - fun for the whole family!
And next Friday the 19th, pre-game with CTRG at Moe’s Southwest Grill at 46 Whitney Avenue in New Haven! Moe’s will be donating a percentage of sales from 5-9PM to CTRG, so come support your favorite rollergirls (and their favorite food group: burritos) as they carb up the night before the game!
Did you know that you can follow CTRG on Instagram? Neither did we! Find us at ctrollergirls (surprise, surprise) - if you ever wanted a peep behind the scenes of CTRG, now’s your chance.
Last but never least, good luck to the handsomest dudes in derby (I mean probably - who knows really? Now that I think about it, Quadzilla’s kind of a dish), the Connecticut Death Quads who take on the Rollin’ Regulators this Sunday at Rollermagic in Waterbury. CTRG and Shoreline Roller Derby will be facing off with mixed teams in a 30-minute opener - don’t miss it!

Do you have your tickets to our October 20 yet?
Sunday our brothers from another mother, the Connecticut Death Quads, take on the Rollin’ Regulators, who are hauling themselves all the way from Delaware for some rockem sockem men’s derby action. Bonus: CTRG takes on Shoreline Roller Derby in a 30-minute expo before the main event! Check out the event page for details!
Monday, come spin with a rollergirl at goGreen Fitness in Orange. We’ll be pedaling our hearts out at the 5:45 class - see you there!

The coming week is a slow one for CTRG (it’s not that we don’t want to see you, it’s that we’re all booked up with practices and whatnot), so put next Friday’s Skate with a Rollergirl on your calendars, and check out these sweet photos from last weekend’s bout!

Tomorrow, come skate with a rollergirl at our home away from home, Roller Magic in Waterbury! $6.50 gets you in the door (skate rental is extra) but zipping around with the ladies of CTRG (and I’m betting some of the gents of the Death Quads) is totally priceless.
Saturday, join CTRG as they indulge their penchant for tots and other assorted fried delights at Sonic of Wallingford! We’ll be there from noon to 4 - stop by and say hi!
Don’t forget! September 14, we’re hosting a screening of Derby Baby: A Story of Love, Addiction and Rink Rash, a feature-length documentary about the growing international women’s roller derby scene. We’ll be at the Little Bit Farm in Seymour

The Bone Crushers hammer and nail! Photo by Asa Frye
What a night! Saturday’s bout (between the Bone Crushers and the Iron Angels) stands as a testament to CTRG’s coaches and refs, who were tasked with dividing the league into local teams of comparable abilities. The first result of the fruits of their labor showed that they know what they’re doing, as the Bone Crushers took home a 124-127 victory! The bout was a nailbiter, with lead changes galore and the scores neck-in-neck for most of the evening. (It really doesn’t get more exciting than going into the final jam with a tied score and no one in the box, y’all.) Congrats to all the players, especially the ones who made their public bouting debuts! CTRG’s second local team game will be September 22, as the Iron Angels take on the Widowmakers and the Yankee Brutals face off with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Roller Radicals - don’t miss it!
Join CTRG for dinner and a movie! September 14, we’re hosting a cookout and screening Derby Baby: A Story of Love, Addiction and Rink Rash, a feature-length documentary about the growing international women’s roller derby scene. We’ll be at the Little Bit Farm in Seymour – bring a blanket or a chair and all your best friends!
Check out CTRG’s website, and flickr to stay up to date!

Saturday, CTRG’s home teams return - join us to watch the Iron Angels take on the Bone Crushers in what is sure to be a (bring it on) fight to the finish! Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance, and you won’t want to miss your last chance to enter to win some kind of fancy bicycle (I don’t know anything about bicycles, but let’s go out on a limb and surmise that it has two wheels and is shiny - it may even be red) from one of our favorite sponsors, Tony’s Bikes! The bike drawing will be held at halftime - don’t miss it! Saturday is also fan appreciation night - the first hundred fans in the door get something, the first two hundred fans in the door get a special something else, and everyone in after that still gets to watch roller derby and stuff their sweet mouths full of cupcakes, so I think it’s a pretty good deal whenever you arrive, don’t you?
It’s not too late to sign up for Sunday’s tryouts! If you have ever wanted to be a CT Rollergirl, now’s your chance! Email info@ctrollerderby.com for all the details - pre-registration and protective gear is required.
September 14, we’re hosting the CT premiere of Derby Baby: A Story of Love, Addiction, and Rink Rash at the Little Bit Farm in Seymour. We’ll have food and drinks and some sweet prizes, so bring a blanket and your very best friends (I’m looking at all you fine ladies and gents of area roller derby leagues) and come hang out with us and some ponies! $10 gets you in (kids under 12 are free, and we have a special derbyfolk rate of $7)

Last Saturday, Shiny Toy Buns blew the competition out of the water at Milford Oyster Fest’s Oyster Eating Contest! Despite a motley crew of competitors, Shiny showed Milford’s bivalve enthusiasts who’s boss and took home the win! Way to represent CTRG, Shiny!
Thursday Thighlights, 8/16/12

Welcome back, campers! I hope you have all spent the last three weeks like I have, engaged in all the wholesome summer fun activities you can stand: water balloon fights, popsicle eating contests, tree climbing - I don’t know, whatever people do outside when it’s sweltering. Anyway: we’re back! CTRG is well-rested (ha!) and ready to get back on the track for our August 25 fan appreciation night and return of the home teams! To kick off our 2012 home season, the Bone Crushers and the Iron Angels are facing off in what is sure to be a knock-down drag out fight to the finish. Get your tickets here!
Tryouts are almost here! If you have ever thought, “You know, I can probably do that,” while watching a CTRG bout, then put your money where your mouth is and email info@ctrollerderby.com to register for our August 26 try outs!
Tomorrow night, join us at the Winchester for our Home Team Homecoming! No cover, just a good time with CTRG and some of our very best friends. (Those would be beers.)

Slugger Face, JK Elemenopee and Delilah Dread at the 2011 Milford Oysterfest!
Just in case you haven’t gotten enough of us, shellfish, or the great outdoors, we’ll be at the Milford Oyster Fest on Saturday! Stop in at the Tony’s Bikes tent to say hello (last year we were conveniently located next to a bunch of Zumba ladies - this year, who knows!) and watch Shiny Toy Buns dominate the oyster eating contest. If Batman shows up again this year, he’d better be prepared to get beat (ahem, again) by a girl.
Mark your calendars - September 14 we are hosting a screening of Derby, Baby at the Little Bit Farm in Seymour. More details will be available here soon, but for now I can just say this: the password is “hotdogs.”
